During the Texas Farm Bureau’s 92nd Annual Meeting, Texas farmers and ranchers spoke via live Zoom with Global Farmer Network member Kees Huizinga, Ukraine, who shared what it’s like to farm in a war zone. Huizinga has farmed in Ukraine since 2003, growing onions, carrots, wheat, and canola, and managing a modern dairy operation.

He described challenges since Russia’s invasion, including disrupted exports, falling grain prices, and rising input costs. While Ukraine has regained enough control of its ports, allowing grain exports to resume and prices to recover, Huizinga continues investing in his farm—even amid nightly drone and rocket attacks—to support his employees and pay taxes that help fund Ukraine’s defense.

Despite the dangers and losses among his team, Huizinga remains hopeful for peace.
