Cornell Alliance for Science - Global farmer panel discussion May 25, 2018 - Rock Island, Illinois, USA Without agriculture, you can’t have food. Six farmers from throughout the world share the challenges and rewards of producing food in Africa, India, the US and the UK. Panelists are Patience Koku, who owns Replenish Farms, a large, irrigated operation that produces soya, maize, rice and vegetables in Nigeria; Andrew Osmond, who raises winter wheat for seed and milling, spring peas, maize, grass, beef cattle and sheep in the United Kingdom; V. Ravichandran, a third-generation, award-winning farmer who has been growing rice, sugarcane, cotton, beans and other crops for over 30 years; Danny Murphy, who has been growing soybeans and corn in Mississippi for 43 years; Rodney Kili, who works with his brother and father on their modern farm in Kenya, where they grow maize, barley, wheat and sunflower, run a mechanized dairy operation and mill maize; and Vanessa Kummer, who farms corn, soybeans, wheat and sugar beets with her husband and son in North Dakota. The panel moderator is Dr. Sam Crowell, an agricultural advisor within the Economic and Business Affairs Bureau at the U.S. Department of State and graduate of Cornell University, where he studied over 300 varieties of rice in collaboration with scientists at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines.
